Extinction Flashcards
1
Q
Extinct
A
When no more individuals of a species exist anywhere in the world
2
Q
Biodiversity
A
- The range of organisms living in an area
- extinction reduces biodiversity
3
Q
Endangered
A
Species of plants and animals that have a low population
4
Q
Gene bank
A
- store genetic material taken from endangered species to prevent extinction
- used for research
5
Q
Factors of extinction
A
- environmental disaster
- new predators
- tourism
- hunting
- disease
- habitat damage
- climate changer
6
Q
Interdependency in extinction
A
- If one species in the food chain becomes extinct
- it will have an affect in other animals in that food chain
- May go extinct
7
Q
Gene bank examples
A
- seed banks =dried seeds stored in -18.c freezers
- tissues= buds/cells of plants stored here
- cryogenic banks= seeds/embryos are stored here at very low temps using nitrogen
8
Q
Gene banks prevent extinction
A
- cells are taken/stored from endangered species in gene banks
- will be used for research and turned into stem cells
- embryo will be injected into similar species to be birthed
