exposure Flashcards
Exposure is used to…
a. challenge irrational cognitions\
b. learn how to manage the feelings
get used to the anxiety that is experienced - habituation
Yerkes & Dodson 1908
when arousal is too high the person cannot attend to the situation and therefore learning the environment is safe does not occur
- thus the arousal should be enough to trigger anxiety but little enough to ensure the person can remain present and learn about the situation and their response
What stage must a client be in to habituate?
Optimal arousal
Graded exposure is…
client experiencing bearable levels of anxiety which the person systematically habituates to enhance their ability to cope.
Anxiety should decrease by half and then move up the hierarchy (Richards & Whyte, 2009) using SUDs
Hierachy
Richards & Whyte, 2009
SUDs
Subjective Units of Distress usually 0-10
- measure them at different points throughout the process, quantifies the experience allowing for half the anxiety to decrease- hopefully before the exposure ends
Prolonged exposure
think safety behaviours and adrenaline exhaustion
