Experimental design Flashcards
Independent groups design
Participants only take part in one condition (2 separate groups)
Repeated measures design
Participants take part in both conditions (1 group)
Matched pairs design
Participants are matched in each condition for characteristics that may have an effect on condition
Practice effects
Participants have done one condition, so they may perform better in the second
Demand characteristics
Participants pick up cues from the environment and change their behaviour
Order effects
During an experiment, participants become tired and bored
Counterbalancing
The sample is divided, one group does condition A before B; the other does B before A
Participants reactivity
Participants act differently because they are being studied
Individual characteristics
Characteristics may influence the way they perform e.g. dyslexia
