Excretion in Humans Flashcards
Where is urea formed?
The liver
What is urea made from?
Excess amino acids
Which organ excretes carbon dioxide?
The lungs
What do the kidneys excrete?
Urea
Excess Water
Salts
Conditions that effect concentration of urine:
Water Intake:
The more fluids drunk, the more water removed
Temperature and Exercise:
More water lost in sweat than urine
What is urea?
A toxic chemical produced from the breakdown of excess amino acids in the liver.
Change in color of urine due to volume of urine:
Large Quantity:
Pale Yellow (urea is less concentrated & contains lots of water)
Small Quantity:
Dark Yellow (Urea is very concentrated and less water is contained)
What is deamination?
The removal of the nitrogenous part of an
amino acid to create urea
The Main Organs in Excretion:
Lungs:
Removes CO2 from the body through respiration
Kidney:
Excretes excess water, salts and urea by producing urine
Skin:
Removes salt, urea and excess water through sweat
Liver:
Excretes bile in faeces through the intestines
What is ultrafiltration?
Removal of smaller molecules like urea, water and salt from blood into renal capsule
Renal Cortex
The outer region of the kidney
Renal Medulla
The inner region of the kidney.
Ureter
A tube that takes urine to the bladder from the kidneys.
Urethra
A tube that releases urine from the bladder, out of the body.
What is excretion?
The process of removing waste products of metabolic reactions, toxic materials and excess substances from an organism
