Exchange of Nutrients & Wastes (PPT5-6) (U1) Flashcards
Name 3 different feeding methods.
- Food absorption
- Endocytosis
- Filter feeding
- Fluid feeding
- Seizing prey
- Herbivory and grazing
How do cells access nutrients?
Transport across membranes.
What are the 4 major stages of digestion?
- Mechanical digestion
- Chemical digestion
- Absorption
- Elimination
What does the physical/ mechanical breakdown do?
Its about physically changing big food bits with a small SA/V ration.
To small bits with a large SA/V
What does the checmial breakdown do?
Breaks apart complex molecules into simple molecules.
How are digestive enzymes manufautered?
By specific cells in the gut wall, by the salivary glands, and the pancreas.
What is the elimination stage about?
Is about the removal of unwanted undigested materials.
What is the structure and functions of the small intestine?
S- Small in diameter. Over 4-6 meters long.
F- To increase the surface area of the surface beyond just its length.
What is excretion?
Excretion is the removal of substances that once formed part of the body of the organism. Were once within cells.
what is egestion?
Egestion is the removal of undigested food from the gut, it was never inside the cells.
Where do nitrogenous wastes come from?
The nitrogenous parts of the amino acid are split off by the liver.
Name the three types of nitrogenous wastes used by animals?
- Ammonia
- Urea
- Uric Acid
What does the organism do to ammonia?
The organism converts the ammonia to urea or uric acid.
State three facts about ammonia
- Is the first nitrogenous waste formed
- Highly toxic
- Very soluble in water
State three facts about urea
- Is larger than ammonia
- Less toxic than ammonia
- Highly soluble in water
- Converting ammonia to urea requires energy.
