Questions to ask that will help you assess fine motor skills in a child
What age should a child show understanding of nouns?
a.
Does the child label,
put 2 words together, say short phrases.
b. Ask “Show me
(demonstrates understanding of nouns)
18 months.
Ask the child to point to body parts
(own -15/12; doll’s – 18/12)
d. Ask “What do you drink/draw/eat with” Show understanding of verbs (2 years)
e. Understands adjectives such as colour by 3 years

Positions
Passive skills (more for baby/infant):
i. supine – pull to sitting and watch head lag
ii. Prone – lifting head, getting up on forearms
iii. Held prone – look at trunk/neck support
- GROSS MOTOR
Active skills
i. Sitting (with or without support)
ii. Crawling/bottom shuffling
iii. Pulling to stand/ cruising furniture
iv. Walking (9-18 months): Look at quality – broad based, confident able to negotiate obstacles/pick things up

vi. Climbing stairs (2 steps on each step – 2, alt feet -3)
