What should an SLP do if a patient is experiencing anxiety?
Restore ownership within the individual, refer to psychologist/psychiatrist
Behaviors are negative reactions a person uses to remove themselves from unpleasant, stressful, or feared situations or tasks
Avoidance/escape behavior
What should an SLP do if a patient is experiencing avoidance/escape behavior?
Make tasks more achievable, assess why individual is resisting therapy, discuss fears a person may have
Individuals may transfer their own feelings of anxiety, fear, loss, or stress onto another person to reduce those feelings within themselves
Displacement/projection
What should an SLP do if a patient is experiencing displacement/projection?
SLP should remain calm, encourage talking about emotions, validate feelings person is experiencing
Patients or caregivers may unconsciously remove themselves emotionally from painful, stressful, or upsetting situations to alleviate emotional stress
Dissociation
Indirect negative reaction expressed toward others that is masked by timidity and passivity; Can present as hostility in the form of procrastination, delaying, or lack of interest or motivation
Passive aggressive
What should an SLP do if someone is being passive aggressive?
Provide open, nonthreatening environment for patients to discuss their feelings and emotions
When a patient consciously suppresses the negative experiences that are the result of their deficits
Repression
Individuals may feel they need to rely or depend on others for care; may resort to sick or helpless role
Learned helplessness
What should an SLP do if a patient is experiencing learned helplessness?
Counsel caregivers on how to keep their loved ones motivated yet independent; Encourage the connection between purpose, growth, and ownership of goals
What are some examples of loss in patients after a neurogenic communication disorder?
Communicative abilities, loss of loved ones, loss of independence, loss of life they once had
The patients’ perceived negative impact of their disorder on their quality of life and the patients’ willingness to change
