How would you educate mothers on ways they can quantify the amount of feed if breastfeeding?
- How long does the baby nurse?
- Does the baby nurse on one or both sides?
- Do you hear the baby suck and swallow through the duration of the feed?

On average, how long do babies feed for?
15-30 minutes on each breast (if breastfeeding)
Finish between 1.5-3 oz within 20-30 minutes (if formula)
Should parents be concerned if their baby is passing green stool?
Not really, just means they are getting more foremilk than hindmilk
- May indicate that baby is not on the breast long enough and not getting as much hindmilk as it should
What two things if seen in the stool of newborns would be concerning?
- Blood - indicates type of protein allergy (milk or soy), fissure, hemorrhoid, significant reflux where there is esophageal irritation
- Mucus - indicates inflammation
How often should objects that are normally put in an infants mouth (e.g. bottle, pacifier) be sterilized?
Once a day
When should pregnant mothers recieve a tdap vaccine?
In their third trimester - provides passive immunity (protects baby for first two months of life)
When do infants first get the flu vaccine?
6 months
Can babies be submerged in water if they still have their umbilical cord stub?
No - sometimes won’t fall off until 3 weeks of age
- Sponge baths are fine until then
