Nutritional needs of pregnancy
- Limit high glycemia carbohydrates (e.g. fruit juices, soda)
- 2 servings of omega 3
- Vitamin A, beta carotene, vitamin D, iron, calcium, folic acid
What effect do anticonvulsants have on pregnancy?
Anticonvulsants can have anti-folate effect
- Continue to take medications through pregnancy with folate supplementation

- Multiple gestation pregnancy

Common side effects of prenatal vitamins
GI distress, constipation, N/V
- Usually resolves by end of first trimester
- If choose to d/c due to side effects, continue folic acid supplementation
Infection precautions against toxoplasmosis, herpes, varicella
- Avoid cleaning litter boxes, avoid working in dirt
- Can wear gloves or wash hands after
- Avoid sexual contact with active herpes lesions
- Avoid contact with people who have chicken pox

What patient education would you give to a pregnant women about hot tubs and saunas?
Hot tubs and saunas can cause symptoms of maternal fever
- Increase in core temperature which is associated with increased risk of neural tube defects
- Takes 10 minutes to raise temp to 104; 15 minutes to 102
How should pregnant women wear their seatbelt?
Lap belt across hips and below uterus, shoulder belt between breasts and lateral to uterus
When is sex contraindicated during pregnancy?
- Placenta previa
- Preterm labor
- Ruptured membranes
