What laboratory test would you use to diagnose gonorrhea and/or chlamydia?
Nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT)
Where can NAAT samples be taken for GC/CT tests?
Cervical mucus, vaginal fluid, urine
- Vaginal swab best
Where to take NAAT samples for females vs males
Females: swab taken from site that is most likely to be positive (often vagina)
Males: in men who have sex with men, take sample at every site in which penetration occurs
- Screened separately
When would you order blood work?
Only for HIV or RPR and VDRL (syphilis)
General screening questions for vaginitis and STIs
- History of gonorrhea or PID in past 2 years
- More than one partner in past 12 months
- New partner in past 90 days
- Affirmative answer to question “Do you have any reason to believe that your partner is having sex with another person?”
Vaginitis/STI screening for <24 years old
- Annual screening for GC/CT
- Routine hcg for GC/CT during pregnancy
Vaginitis/STI screening for >25 years old
- Current STI, previous STI, new or multiple partners
- Partner with concurrent parters, partner with STI
- Inconsistent use of condoms when NOT in mutually monogamous relationship
- Exchanges sex for drugs or money
