Probable signs of pregnancy
Physiologic and anatomic changes noted on physical exam
- Breast changes (fullness, tenderness, enlargement)
- Skin changes (chloasma, linea nigra, striae)
- Enlargement of the abdomen or uterus palpable fetal outline ballottement
- Hegar’s sign
- Goodell’s sign
- Chadwick’s sign
- Palpation of contractions
- Positive pregnancy test
- Palpable fetal movement

Softening of lower uterine segment
- By 6 weeks
What is Goodell’s sign?
Softening of cervix
- By 6 weeks
What is Chadwick’s sign?
Blue hue of cervix and vagina
- By 8 weeks
Positive signs of pregnancy
Definitive and unmistakable signs that can be documented by provider
- Pregnancy visualized by ultrasound
- Audible fetal heart tones
- Fetal movement felt by provider
How soon are hormones detected by pregnancy tests?
By 8-10 days (2 weeks) after conception or 1 week after missed period
False negatives are more likely when using pregnancy tests at what point?
False negatives more likely if performed before first day of expected menstrual cycle
Do pregnancy tests offer information about fetal viability?
Pregnancy tests offer no information about fetal viability
- Evaluated with serial quantitative hCG levels
- Two values at 48-72 hours apart
