Exam 4 Muscles of the Superficial posterior leg Flashcards
Muscles of the Superficial posterior leg include:
Gastrocnemius
Soleus
plantaris
Together the gastrocnemius & the soleus make up the:
triceps sure (calf muscle)
The tendons of the 3 muscles fuse together to form:
Achilles Tendon or Tendon calcaneus
ALL posterior leg muscles are supplied by the:
Tibial Nerve
Origin of the gastrocnemius:
Lateral & medial epicondyles of the femur
Insertion of the gastrocnemius:
Tuberosity of the calcaneus
Sesamoid bone which is found imbedded in the lateral head of the origin of the gastrocnemius & articulates w/ the lateral condyle of the femur
Fabella
Origin of the soleus:
Soleal line of the tibia
head & shaft of the fibula
Insertion of the soleus:
Tuberosity of the calcaneus
Actions of both gastrocnemius & soleus
- Plantar flex the foot
- Inversion of the foot
- Stabilizes the ankle joint
- Small variable muscle which is missing in about 5% of the pop.
- Found b/t th elateral head of the gastrocnemius & the soleus
- Muscle belly is short & its tendon is long & descends along the medial border of the tendon calcaneus
Plantaris
Origin of plantars:
Lateral supracondylar ridge of the femur
Insertion of the plantars:
Tuberosity of the calcaneus
Actions of the plantars:
- Plantar flex of the foot
2. Inversion of the foot
