Exam 4 - DVT Flashcards
1
Q
thrombus
A
- blood clot that remains attached to a vessel wall
- more common in veins due to flow and pressure
2
Q
thromboembolus
A
- happens once is detaches
- venous thromboembolism (VTE)
3
Q
DVT
A
- deep vein thrombosis
- occurring in the lower extremities
4
Q
triad of Virchow
A
- venous stasis
- venous endothelial damage
- hypercoagulable states
- the three factors that promote the formation of the venous thrombosis
5
Q
highest risk for DVT
A
- ortho surgeries
- spinal cord injuries
- ob/gynecologic conditions
6
Q
complications of VTE/PE
A
- pulmonary embolism (PE)
- chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension
- post-thrombotic syndrome
- phlegmesia cerula dolens
7
Q
treatment for VTE/DVT
A
- anti-coagulation therapy
- prevention of risk factors
- IVC filters (vena cava interruption devices)
- embolectomy
- prevention: SCDs, TED hose, mobilization
8
Q
DVT/VTE patho
A
- thrombus usually occurs near a venous valve
- inflammation around the thrombus promotes inappropriate platelet aggregation and the thrombus grows
- pressure can build and cause edema of the extremity
