- Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy in children, and brain rumors are the most common solid tumors
- Hodgkin and non-hodgkin lymphoma are the most common diagnoses during adolescence, followed by thyroid, brain, and testicular tumors

What is an allogenic versus autologous bone marrow transplant?
- Allogeneic: Donated cells from sibling, parent, or unrelated person with genetically compatible bone marrow
- Autologous: Cells are derived from the patient; Cells can be treated outside the body before reinfusion
What percentage of children with cancer survive 5+ years today?
85% of kids with cancer now survive 5 years or more
What are adaptive coping strategies? Examples?
Positive reframing, acceptance, social support, maintain objectivity, active involvement
What are maladaptive coping strategies? Examples?
Denial, helplessness, cog. escape, behavioral
What is motivational interviewing? When might it be used?
Flexible, client-centered, directive approach to enhancing motivation for change, which can be used to enhance adolescents’ motivation to make changes in diabetes treatment adherence
What is radiation treatment? What is chemotherapy?
- Radiation destroys/damages cancer cells (high energy waves)
- Chemotherapy: Meds that work throughout whole body
