What is the relationship between obesity and emotional stress?
Adolescents with OW/OB report greater chronic =emotional stress compared to peers with a healthy weight (higher levels of stress typically precede weight gain in youth, youth who endorse greater eating in reponse to negative emotions are more likely to have OW/OB
What psychosocial consequences are associated with pediatric obesity?
Lower health-realted quality-of-life, Lower self-esteem, higher depressive symptons, teasing due to weight stigma, lower body image
What is pediatric obesity? Is obesity a chronic medical disease?
Obesity is a chronic, and common medical disease.
What is the relationship between obesity and body dissatisfaction?
Children with a larger body size report lower body image - meaning higher levels of body dissatisfcation
How is obesity defined and measured in youth? How is overweight measured and defined in youth? How is this related to BMI?
To diagnose obesity in children, BMI percentile normed for age and sex (overweight is more than 85th percentile; Obese is more than 95th percentile).
Be familiar with the ecological model of childhood obesity.
(Child Characteristics: Gender, Age, Race, Ethnicity, Physical activity, stress, genetics, dietary intake). (Parent+Family Characteristics: Mutrition knowldge, types of foods in home, parental mointoring, parent weight status, feeding pracitices). (Community+Societal Charactersitics: School lunches, work hours, grocery stores, poverty, perceptions of health, fast food, crime and safety)
At what age may body dissatisfaction begin?
As early as 6 years old
Do children with obesity have a higher risk for engaging in disordered eating?
Yes, increase risk for binge eating among youth with obesity
What is the relationship between obesity and impulsivity levels?

What is binge eating?
Eating a very large amount of food in a short amount of time and feeling that you cannot control how much or what you are eating
How do social determinants of health affect the risk for a child developing obesity?
Food/drinks offered at daycare, outdoor spaces and safety for physical activity, “food swamps” (density of fast food restaurants), urban “food deserts” (lack of affordable healthy food). Community policies
What is behavioral family lifestyle intervention?
Target changes in the family environment (changing eating and activity behaviors, monitor health behaviors, goal setting and problem-solving, parent modeling)
