What are the symptoms of an asthma attack?
Wheezing, chest retractions (esp with infants), breathing is faster, feeling chest tightness (or heaviness), coughing, difficulty sleeping
What are the triggers for youth with asthma?
Viral respiratory infections, exercise, cold air or changes in weather, irritants, allergens, emotions + stress
What is a spacer and why is it helpful?
Helps medication go directly to child’s airway, makes sure medicine doesn’t get stuck in back of throat or escape from sides of mouth
How might a parent’s mental health influence a child’s asthma management?
Maternal depression is associated with higher morbidity
What is biofeedback and how is it helpful?
Helps control stress response by recognizing it and employing relaxation techniques (e.g., deep breathing, visualizations, and meditation to calm physiological arousal)
What is a spirometry test?
Lung functioning test, shows the capacity (how much air lungs can hold) and flow of air through the lungs, how much air can exhaled forcefully
What are barriers to adherence for children with asthma?
Lower parental health literacy, family conflict, financial challenges, access to healthcare, poor patient/family communication with healthcare team
