EXAM 2: Evidence-based intervention Flashcards
What is evidence-based practice?
“The integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences”
Be familiar with the 3-legged stool model for evidence-based practice.
- Best available research: strong research evidence to support treatment and assessment practices and disseminate these practices (from research context to real-world setting)
- patient characteristics and preferences: addressing variables related to individual patient context (characteristics, values, cultures, preferences)
- clinical expertise: training pediatric psychologists in EBP (achieve high level of clinical skill) is all EBPP
What is a randomized controlled trial?
Considered the “goal standard”, distinguish impact of treatment by randomly assigning patients to a treatment v. control condition and examining change from pre to post treatment. control for changes in patient states that reflect natural history of the disorder
How do psychological interventions for parents of youth with chronic illnesses affect parents?
psychological therapies may improve parenting behavior (children with chronic pain, cancer, etc) and parental mental health (children with chronic pain or cancer
What are the ways to disseminate evidence-based therapies?
Web-based resrouces, workshops and continuing education
What is cognitive behavioral therapy?
Emphasis on understanding associations between behaviors (actions), cognititions (thoughts), and emotions (feelings), (treatment focuses on changing maldaptive behavioral, cognitive, and social/environmental factors
What is problem solving therapy?
Emphasis on constructive problem-solving attitude and skills, improving social competence, decreasing emotional distress (treatment focuses on acquiring problem-solving skills, typically via a sequence that includes 1). defiing the problem, 2). producing alternative solutions, 3). decision making, 4). evaluating the solution)
Know how cultural adaptations influence evidence-based therapies.
Overall, cultural adaptations of evidence-based therapies are recommended. As part of EBP, it is important to consider individual context (ethnic cultural, sex, age, etc), and relevant systems (e.g., family, school). Research shows that culturally tailored EBTs are effective
