- Interpersonal needs (Inclusion, Control,Affection)

A content message accounts for what exactly you have said while a relationship message is defined as “how you said it”.
What are the three interpersonal needs that drive interpersonal communication?
inclusion
control
affection
What are the four principles that define interpersonal communication?
- Interpersonal Communication is inescapable.
- Interpersonal Communication is irreversible.
- Interpersonal Communication is complicated.
- Interpersonal Communication is contextual.
How is Interpersonal Communication inescapable?
- We can’t not communicate.
- Refusing to communicate is still communicating.
- Verbal and nonverbal channels are constantly working.
How is Interpersonal Communication irreversible?
- You can’t unsay somthing
- The jury will disregard the last statemen
How is Interpersonal Communication complicated?
- How many people are actually in the conversation
- We don’t actually exchange ideas, but symbols
- words can be used differently in different contexts and cultures
- If communication can go wrong, it will
How is Interpersonal Communication contextual?
- pshycological context [needs, desires, values]
- Relational context [your relationship with other parties]
- Situational context [psycho-social “where” Northgate vs. this classroom]
- environmental Context [physical “where” Noise, tempurature, chair, comfort]
- Cultural Context [Norms and cultural rules texans and asians]
What are Osmo Wiio’s four laws?
- If communication can fail, it will.
- If a message can be understood in different ways, it will be understood in just that way which does the most harm.
- There is always sombody who knows better than you what you meant by your message.
- The more communication there is, the more difficult it is for communication to succeed.
Social Exchange Theory
Relationships change as there is more communication. How does this conversation change my relationship with the persons?
Relational Dialectics Theory
The way we communicate is dictated by tension between these concepts;
- Connectedness and separateness - Clarity and uncertainty - openess and closedness
Social communication theory
