EXAM 2 Dementia interventions Flashcards
Evidence Based Interventions for PWD
Errorless Learning, Spaced Retrieval Training, External Memory Aids, Montessori Approach, Ability-Based Approach, and Reminiscence Therapy
EBP: Errorless Learning
- Technique used to teach new information or skills by reducing errors
- Aims to reduce the errors throughout various stages of learning so that they are more successful with the new skill
-Can be used in combination in ANY intervention
EBP: Spaced Retrieval Training
- Shaping is a way to help someone remember things by asking them to recall info after longer and longer breaks.
- It works well for remembering tasks, events, and facts.
- Great for procedural, episodic, and semantic memory
EBP: External Memory Aids
- Memory books are great for helping people remember personal information and improving communication.
-can also include reminiscence therapy, which encourages recalling past memories.
Benefits of memory books
- Better memory of personal information and starting conversations on their own
- Improved use of memory aids or techniques
- Fewer unwanted behaviors
- Better communication between caregivers and people with dementia
EBP: Montessori Approach
- goal is to help maintain and improve daily life skills.
- Activities are designed to match the client’s cognitive abilities and encourage social interaction and engagement.
Reading Roundtable Montessori Approach
- structured reading and discussion activity that uses specially created stories to make communication easier for people with dementia.
- Aimed at increasing positive engagement and verbal discussion
Benefits of Reading Roundtable
- Stay focused (attention, memory)
- Have a chance to socialize and interact
- Take part in conversations
- Get language practice through reading and reminiscing
EBP: Ability-Based Approaches (R.E.D.)
- Targets patients to feel useful and have a purpose in life.
- Tasks should be meaningful for the client and consider the client’s abilities at their current stage
Recognize: patient recognizes rather than recall
External cues: cues/materials provide the feedback
Doing: prolongs an ability to give purpose
EBP: Reminiscence Therapy
- Attempts to stimulate recognition of past events, mental activity, language, and overall well-being
- reviews happy memories to improve mood and encourage meaningful conversations.
Validation Therapy
goal is keeping the client comfortable and safe
Can be used with EBP approaches by giving tasks that help the client feel helpful and keep their skills.
