EXAM 12: Immune reactions of blood Flashcards
1
Q
what happens (broadly) if the wrong blood is transfused
A
- severe reactions
- often death
2
Q
Isoantibodies
A
- antibodies in the serum of one individual, directed against the antigens of RBCs of other individuals of the same species
- are naturally occurring
- level will increase if the individual has been transfused with a foreign blood type in the past
- if 2 different blood types are used clumping and occasionally cell rupture will occur
- we use humans as our example sp
3
Q
hemagglutination
A
clumping, and sometimes cell rupture
4
Q
what are the two important isoantibodies
A
A and B
(O is not an antigen, it’s the lack of one)
5
Q
cross-matching
A
- simple test used to determine if two blood types are compatible without specifically identifying antigens involved
- involves testing the blood of the donor against the serum of the recipient, if isoantibodies are present, hemagglutination will occur
