EXAM 1 Lecture Objectives Flashcards
1
Q
Discuss the different types of microscopy that are utilized to observe the microbial world
A
Light microscopy- used to observe most organisms, 3 lenses, 4 types (bright-field, dark field, phase-contrast and differential-contrast)
Electron microscopy- requires fixation/freezing that damages/alters cell structures, 2 types (transmission and scanning)
Fluorescence microscopy- specimens are stained utilizing a fluorescent chemical used to study cell properties
2
Q
Understand the role cell size plays in cell growth.
A
- viruses are smaller than bacteria which are smaller than human cells
- small cells have more surface area relative to cell volume, rather than large cells, they grow faster and support greater nutrient exchange per unit cell vol.
