Exam 1 - Antivirals Flashcards
1
Q
why are there so few antivirals
A
- often the virus has finished replicating by the time signs and symptoms develop
- antivirals only work during cell replication
- viruses live inside the body’s cells, so drugs that kill a virus could also kill healthy cells
2
Q
acyclovir MOA
A
- interferes with viral nucleic acid synthesis, its regulation, or both DNA and RNA
- prevents virus from binding to cells so virus cannot get into cells thus preventing viral replication
- stimulates the body’s immune system to kill the virus
3
Q
acyclovir indications
A
- used to suppress replication of: HSV 1, HSV2, VZV
4
Q
is acyclovir a cure for herpes
A
- NO!
- it can decrease symptom severity and frequency of outbreaks but it is not a cure
5
Q
side effects of acyclovir
A
- GI distress
- renal impairment
- seizures
- ITP
- IV form: tissue necrosis
6
Q
oseltamivir MOA
A
- inhibit neuraminidases in influenza viruses
- treats the flu
7
Q
indications for oseltamivir
A
- used for prophylaxis and to treat active disease
- most often given to elderly and immunocompromised
8
Q
side effects of oseltamivir
A
- nausea and vomiting
- seizures
- renal impairment
9
Q
what is ganciclovir used to treat
A
- cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- controls but doesn’t cure
10
Q
MOA for ganciclovir
A
- inhibits viral DNA polymerases resulting in chain termination
11
Q
what is the black box warning for ganciclovir
A
- hematologic toxicity
- fertility impairment
- fetal toxicity
- carcinogenesis
12
Q
what should you not give ganciclovir with
A
- imipenem-cilastin because of seizure potential
