Evolution Quiz Flashcards
Vestigial Structure
Structure that is inherited from an ancestor but is not needed/or not used as much as it was in the ancestor
Homologous structures
similar physical features in species that share a common ancestor, but the structures are used for completely different things in each organism
Analogous Structures
Similarly functioning and physical features in organisms that do not share a common ancestor
Coevolution
When species interact closely with each other and evolve because of that.
Convergent Evolution
Distantly related organisms independently evolve similar traits to adapt to similar necessities
Adaptive evolution
When organisms of a single lineage diverge into different adaptive forms
Speciation
when a group within a species separates from other members of its species and develops its own unique characteristics.
Embryology
the study of the formation and development of an embryo and fetus
Law of superposition
The youngest rock is the top layer and the oldest rock is the bottom layer when you have rock layers, so when a fossil is buried you look at the layer of rock to explain how old it is
