Multicellular and Unicellular Organisms Flashcards
Prokaryotes Definition:
Unicellular organisms that can be bacteria or archaea
Eukaryotes
Can be unicellular OR multicellular can be protists, plants, animals, or fungi
Unicellular organisms?
Carry out all life functions on their own, they reproduce, metabolize, and grow independently within the cell. An example of this is a bacteria.
Multicellular organisms?
An organism made out of many cells
- use cell specialization
- cells become efficient in one process needed for the multicellular organisms to survive
- organisms dependent on other cells to survive
Colony
A unicellular organisms living together/working together
Colonies vs. Multicellular organisms
cells in colonies can survive/do things on their own
cells in multicellular organisms are dependent on each other for survival
Cells in colonies have cell specialization but CAN switch back
cells in multicellular organisms are specialized and can NOT switch back
Example of unicellular and multicellular organisms?
Unicellular: Bacteria
Multicellular: Squirrel
Levels of organization in a an organism?
Cells –> Tissue –> Organ –> Organ sytem
Levels of organization in biology?
cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organism, population, community, ecosystem, biosphere
4 types of tissue
Epithelial:
- protects, absorbs, secretes
- Ex: Skin
Connective:
Supports, protects, + gives structure to tissues + organs in body
Ex: Fat
Muscle Tissue:
- voluntary movement
- involuntary movement
Ex: Cardiac muscle in heart
Nervous Tissue:
- sends + receives messages
Ex: Spinal cord
