Evolution Flashcards
Natural Selection [1]
• When the environment places a selective pressure on a population, individuals with advantageous traits will have a selective advantage and increase their fitness (the ability to survive & reproduce)
Artificial Selection [1]
• Humans choose which individuals have desirable traits, and allowing them to have increased fitness
Monoculture [2]
• Populations of individuals that are identical
• Result of artificial selection
Selective advantage [1]
• Allows for better survival & reproduction
Adaptation [1]
• A variation within population that has a selective advantage due to the environment
Evolution [1]
• The change in frequency of heritable traits within population over generations
Rapid Growth [2]
• Organisms that rapidly grow and reproduce can produce more mutations that lead to more variation
• Allows for more rapid adaptation and evolution of the population
