evidence for evolution Flashcards
homosapiens
the modern human species
evolution
a gradual change in the characteristics of a species overtime
binomial system
the system of namingorgansims using two latin words
fossils
the remains of organisms from millions of years ago which are found in rocks
how fossils form
when parts of organisms have not yet decayed (can happen when conditions needed for decay are absent)
if parts of the organism are slowly replaced by minerals during the decaying process
from the preserved traces of organisms
problems with fossils
most life forms were soft-bodied organisms which very rarely form fossils.
fossils that did form have been destroyed due to changes in the earths crust
the earliest evidence of animals using stone tools
3.3 million years ago. Scientists can work out the ages of different layers of rock. They then assume that a tool is around the same age as the layer of rock
uses of the oldest stone tools
mainly used for killing animals and cracking nuts
