a contraceptive that increases the concentration of various reproductive hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) in the blood, which prevents the maturation of the egg and ovulation

- the IUD is made of plastic with a copper coil
- the copper alters the cervical mucus which makes sperm more difficult to survive
