Evaluating the approaches - Scientific vs Non Scientific Flashcards
What does it mean to be scientific?
‘(Knowledge from) the careful study of the structure and behaviour of the physical world, Especially by watching, measuring, doing experiments, the development of theories to describe the results of these activities
2 aspects that make an approach scientific:
controlled investigation & objective measurement
Non scientific ➡️ scientific:
Psychodynamic, positive, cognitive, behaviourist, biological
What is a fluid investigation?
All EVs are allowed bc that is real life
+s of taking a scientific approach to research:
can be repeated, can make predictions as can establish cause and effect, can be applied, respected
+s of taking a less scientific approach:
reflects the complexity of real life, can measure the breadth of human thought and behaviour, measures the depth of human thought
what are the scientific approaches?
bio, cog, behav
the positive approach?
strives to use scientific methodologies but is sometimes limited
the psychodynamic approach is?
ideographic in nature and uses more subjective methods
-s of scientific methods?
often lack Ecological V, limited in what they can measure, too simplistic
