Biological Approach Assumptions Flashcards
1
Q
1 - State?
A
behaviour can be explained in terms of evolutionary influences
2
Q
1 - Explain?
A
- evolution can explain how our mind and behaviour have changed over millions of years to adapt to the demands of our environment
- Darwin’s theory of Natural Selection states any characteristics that id the chance of survival/ reproduction are passed on genetically to next generation
3
Q
1- Example?
A
Mate selection
- males seek women who look like ‘good baby makers’, young attractive = fertile - red lips, wide hips, big breasts
- women seek males who can provide for them duing pregnancy/ raising a young child - good income, home, reliable, faithful
4
Q
2 - state?
A
behaviour can be explained in terms of localisation of brain function
5
Q
2 - explain ?
A
- each area of the brain has a specialised fuction
- the cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the brain, is / into 4 regions - Frontal, Temporal, Occipital, parietal
6
Q
2 - e.g.
A
prefrontal cortex is involved in regulating agressive behaviour
7
Q
3 - state?
A
behaviour can be explained in terms of neurotransmitters
8
Q
3 - explain ?
A
- cells called neurones make up the nervous system
- they interact by chemical messages called neurotransmitters which diffuse across the synapse and then dock into receptor sites on the next neurone
- levels of neurotransmitter are linked to mood
9
Q
3 - example?
A
- neurotransmitters are beleievd to play a role in mental health
- low levels of serotonin in the body linked to depression
- some antidepressants work by increasing levels of serotonin
10
Q
role of amygdala
A
triggering agressive behaviour
