Eukaryotic Plant Cells Flashcards
PLANTS DO NOT CONTAIN CENTRIOLES
PLANTS DO NOT CONTAIN CENTRIOLES
Unlike animal cells what are plants outermost boundaries?
- the cell wall
What is the cell wall mainly composed of ?
Carbohydrate polymer called cellulose
What is the function of a cell wall?
Prevents cell from bursting
What is the function of the vacuole?
- in plant cells the large cell vacuole maintains STABILITY
- the large cell vacuole is filled with WATER and SOLUTES (cell sap)
- this pushes the cytoplasm against the cell wall making the cell turgid and thus helping to support the plant
What is the TONOPLAST?
The TONOPLAST is the name of the membrane that surrounds the vacuole
What are chloroplasts?
- oval, flattened shaped organelles
- chloroplasts have a double membrane –> chloroplast envelope which is permeable to many small ions
What are the function of chloroplasts?
- chloroplasts are the organelles in which photosynthesis takes place producing SUGARS and other ORGANIC NUTRIENTS for the cell
- chloroplasts are filled with a photosynthetic green pigment called chlorophyll which traps the energy from sunlight
What are thylakoids?
Fluid filled sacs
What do thylakoids do?
Thylakoids are stacked up in the chloroplasts into structures called granum
What are contained within the inner membrane of the chloroplasts and surrounding thylakoids ?
- contained within the inner membrane of the chloroplast and surrounding the thylakoids is a gel-like substance called the STROMA
It contains enzymes and sugars all needed for photosynthesis
