3.against- opinion polls vs social media

A

influence through TO and voting behavior thru tactical voting
TO more likely to be higher if indicate a close result
2024 TO 60% clear L win
also be seen in 2015 and in brexit wasn’t a clear result high TO
if election is decided people don’t vote or vote in protest as won’t affect TO

tactical voting 2015 LD switch to L to stop L from winning
can also shape party politics
2022 people opposed to trans rights C took this on

Q

3.social media more important than opinion polls

A

majority pay little attention to opinion polling
opinion polls realists reach voters through SM
polls often wrong ‘shy tories’ underestimation
In 1992, they failed to predict Major’s narrow victory, instead the majority of polls predicted
either a narrow labour victory or a hung parliament. The exit poll was even wrong that year,

They were wrong again in 2015. They predicted Labour being wiped out by the SNP in 2015,
but predicted Labour and the Conservatives would both have about 34% of the vote in
England, in reality the Conservatives had about 36.9% and Labour 30.4%.
This being said, in both 2019 and 2024, polling was largely accurate
