region just shows the influence of class
north used to be heartland cos of higher concentration of working class voters
southeast cos of middle and upper class voters
regional divide could be seen as reflecting age and education divide as cities eg london have higher educated and younger so vote L
the rural constituencies tend to have older and less educated
