What are the broad groups of racism, internal?
Labelling and teacher racism, pupil responses and subcultures, ethnocentric curriculum, institutional racism and selection and segregation.

Teachers were quick to discipline black pupils compared to others with similar behaviour, ‘racialised expectations’ teachers misinterpret behaviour and see black pupils as anti-authority creating teacher pupil conflict reinforcing stereotypes leading to further problems.

Teachers showed 3 types of racism:
1) the colour blind - believes all pupils are equal but in practice racism goes unchallenged.
2) liberal chauvinists - believe blacks are culturally deprived so have lower expectations.
3) overt racists - believe blacks are inferior and actively discriminate against them.

Teachers hold a ‘black machismo’ stereotype, black boys respond to racism.
1) conformity - accepted school values and eager to succeed.
2) rebellion - reject school values, opposed school by joining a peer group reinforcing negative stereotypes.
3) retreatism - isolate and disconnect from peer group subcultures and the school, low profile.
4) innovation - pro education, anti school, disconnected from conformist, kept credibility with rebels while still valuing education success.

Inbuilt discrimination eg school, police and media.
