Principle I
Hold paramount the welfare of other people they serve professionally or participants in research and scholarly activities and shall treat animals involved in a humane manner
PROVIDE SERVICES COMPETENTLY
USE YOUR RESOURCES TO PROVIDE THE BEST SERVICES POSSIBLE AND REFER OUT IF NECESSARY
DO NOT DELEGATE YOUR SKILLS TO SUPPORT PERSONNEL UNLESS YOU ARE THERE TO SUPERVISE
TELL CLIENTS/RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF TREATMENT/ PRODUCTS/ RESEARCH
EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF YOUR SERVICE/PRODUCTS AND ONLY CHOOSE THOSE OF WHICH BENEFIT CAN BE REASONABLE EXPECTED
NEVER GIVE GUARANTEES-ONLY REASONABLE STATEMENTS OF PROGRESS
NEVER PROVIDE THERAPY SERVICES BY CORRESPONDENCE

Principle II
SLPa are required to achieve and maintain the highest level of professional competence
Only act as an SLP when you have earned your CCC or are working in your Clinical Fellowship Year
When unsure of your competence/confidence in an area, refer on until you get more training
All SLP’s will participate in continuing education experiences
If you need to delegate your skills, delegate only to a therapist holding their CCC, a CFY or to assistants that are properly supervised.
Never expect employees under your supervision to provide services they are ill prepared to deliver
Be sure all professional equipment is working well and callibrated
Principle III
SLPs are to promote public awareness of the field by developing needed services and being truthful in all public communications
Be truthful about your credentials, competence, education, training, experience and research contributions.
Do not participate in activities that might create a conflict of interest.
Do not misrepresent diagnostic information, research, professional services or products.
Do not become part of fraudulent financial transactions.
Be honest in all marketing endeavors.
Principle IV
Individuals shall honor their responsibilities to the professions and their relationships with colleagues, students, and members of allied professions; Individuals shall uphold the dignity and autonomy of the professions, maintain harmonies interprofessional and intraprofessional relationships, and accept the professions’ self-imposed standards
Supervisors will keep other SLPs/CFYs/students under their direction from violating the ASHA Code of Ethics.
Be nice, be honest, be truthful…nuff said!
Refrain from sexual misconduct with clients or students under your care.
Be sure credit is given only to those persons who contributed to the work and give it proportionately.
When speaking to colleagues about professional services, research results, and/or products, keep it professional.
Use your independent, professional judgment regardless of referral source or prescription!
SLPs will not discriminate in professional relationships with colleagues or with students on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation or disability.
When the Code of Ethics has been violated, inform the Board of Ethics.
Cooperation with the Board of Ethics is expected when consideration and adjudication of complaints of violation occur.
