Ch. 7: EB Decision Making in Comm. Intervention Flashcards
Evidence Based Practice (ASHA)
An approach in which current, high quality research evidence is integrated with practitioner expertise and client preferences and values into the process of making clinical decisions
- New to the field of speech-language pathology, it has its roots in the medical field.
- Answers the question, “How do I know that what I do actually works?”
Three Part Response
EBP forces the SLP to base decisions on evidence rather than opinion, past practice and/or prior teaching
Discount the opinions of expert authorities when those opinions are contradicted by scientific evidence
Focus on the small portion of research that is directly relevant to decisions about practice
Judge the quality of research evidence using strict criteria:
Acountability
We must design treatment programs that help patients make authentic, functional progress
Due Process
We have to be so sure that the available evidence supports our therapy plan that our service can be defended in a court of law
Client/Clinician Time
Therapy plans using EBP practices yield favorable outcomes with greater efficiency
Family/Client Satisfaction
EBP clearly states the need for client/family involvement in the treatment process. In doing so, customer satisfaction will increase
Enhanced Professionalism
Our field is not fit for a “recipe” approach to therapy.
Thoughtful, informed professional consideration is required to provide the care each client requires
Making Decisions
EBP Cycle
- Ask a Clinical Question (PICO)
- Search for the best available evidence that fits your need
- Evaluate Evidence (Levels 1-6)
- Make clinical decision with client/family input and using your professional expertise
- Implement clinical decision and collect data
- Evaluate/Document outcome of decision
- Refer back to original question to validate or modify treatment decision
PICO
- P opulation (age, gender, diagnosis)
- I ntervention (target, group/individual)
- C omparison (
- O utcome
Search for Evidence
Evaluate Evidence
Determine if the study is appropriate and valid for your particular client and practice
Decision Based on Shared Input
- Clinician explains the evidence with client’s family and discusses the pros and cons for each intervention.
- Together, make a decision for what is best for client.
Implement the Course of Action and Document the Results
Refer back to PICO question to validate or invalidate effectiveness of EBP used
