Ethical Considerations Flashcards
Experimenter Effect
Rosnow and Rosenthal (1997) - the experimenters values/beliefs can influence research; create physical and emotional distance (single blind/double blind)
Informed Consent
Fully informing participants of events they are participating in; risks, information collection, distribution
Privacy
Preventing unwanted intrusion from gov or others; collection, storage, and sharing of info
Anonymity
Protection of identity by not disclosing names
Confidentiality
Secrecy attached to info given by patient/client
Voluntary Participation
participants must be willing to participate without consequences/threats influencing their decision
Withdrawal Rights
Participants have the right to withdraw at any time without consequences
Deception in Research
Can only be used when prior knowledge about the experiment may influence results; eg Milgram’s electric shock experiment (1963) - must debrief
Debriefing
Participants who aren’t fully informed about the purpose of a study must be told in order to avoid physical/psychological stress, correct mistaken attitudes/beliefs, gain access to info about study
Professional Conduct
Must follow agreed principles for the ethical conduct; benefits of research must outweigh any risks, welfare shouldn’t be compromised
