Animal Research Flashcards
Why are animals used in research
- To advance scientific understanding
- Provide models to study behavior, physiology, development
- Develop and test potential forms of treatment
- Protect the safety of people, animals, environment
Pro animal testing ethics
Experimenting on animals is acceptable if suffering is minimized, benefits couldn’t be discovered by other means
Anti animal testing
Experimenting causes suffering, the human benefits aren’t proven, and the benefits could be produced in other ways
The three R’s
Reduction, refinement, replacement
Reduction
decreasing the number of animals used; improving experimental techniques, data analysis, sharing info
Refinement
refining the experiment to reduce suffering; less invasive conditions and medical care, better living conditions
Replacement
using alternative techniques; using cell cultures, computer models, human volunteers, epidemiological studies
