Esters Flashcards
What is the word equation to make an ester?
Carboxylic acid + alcohol -> ester + water
(REVERSIBLE REACTION)
What is the functional group of esters?
-COO
What is the reaction called between carboxylic acids and alcohols to form esters?
Esterification reactions.
What is another name for esterification reactions and why can it be called this?
Condensation reactions because they produce water.
What substances do you need to perform an esterification practical?
Ethanoic acid, ethanol or pentan-1-ol, concentrated sulphuric acid and sodium carbonate solution.
Why do you need strong sulphuric acid in an esterification reaction?
To act as a catalyst.
Why do you need sodium carbonate in an esterification reaction?
To neutralise the reaction.
Ethyl and pentyl ethanoates are volatile, what does this mean?
They are smelly compounds with a low boiling point.
Give 3 uses of ethyl ethanoate:
-In food, for example flavouring in confectionary
-Solvents, for example glue/nail polish remover
-In paints, as an activator/hardener.
Give 3 uses of pentyl ethanoate:
-Banana/apple scents
-Liquid bandages
-used to make penicillin.
What is the displayed formula for ethyl ethanoate?
