Carboxylic Acids Flashcards
What is the functional group of carboxylic acids?
-COOH
What letters in the name of an organic molecules show its a carboxylic acid?
‘-oic acid’
What is the behaviour of carboxylic acids?
An acid is a H+ donor, so like all other acids carboxylic acids donate H+ ions to form salts.
The carboxylic acid functional group (COOH) loses its H+ and becomes negatively charged.
The name changes from ‘-oic acid’ in the carboxylic acid to ‘-oate’ in the salt.
Carboxylic Acid + Metal -> ?
Carboxylic Acid + Metal -> Salt + Hydrogen
(like other acids)
What are 2 observations in a carboxylic acid + metal reaction?
-Effervescence
-Solid disappears
Carboxylic Acid + Metal Carbonate -> ?
Carboxylic Acid + Metal Carbonate -> Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
Carboxylic Acid + Alcohol -> ?
Carboxylic Acid + Alcohol -> Ester + Water
How are carboxylic acids made?
When alcohols are oxidised and gain another oxygen atom.
