Equine Opthalmolpgy 2 Flashcards
What is Phthisis bulbs?
Shrinking of the eye
- can occur after lens extraction
- check eyelashes (normal = horizontal, abnormal = downwards)
What is Equine recurrent uveitis?
Uveitis/Iridocyclitis/Periotic ophthalmia/Moon blindness
- we still dont know cause: Lepto/viruses/Onchocera
- worldwide
- 12% of all horses
- appaloosas
Acute and chronic
What are the symptoms of acute ERU?
1) Pain
- Photophobia
- belpharospasm
- lacrimation
2) conjunctivitis
3) cornea edema/ vascularisation
4) hypopyon (Pus in the anterior chamber)
5) mitosis
6) Posterior synechiae
What is Uveitis?
Iris,colliery body, choroid
Inflammation of entire vascular tunic
What makes up the uvea?
Iris
Ciliary body
Choroid
What occurs during hypopyon?
Macrophages fight infection = Puss = dead white blood cells
-accumulate in anterior chamber
What is posterior synechiae?
Iris attaches to the anterior surface of the lens
What is anterior synechiae?
Iris sticks to Posterior surface of the cornea
What is the treatment for ERU?
1) analgesics : Phenylbutazone
2) Mydriatics: Atropine, dark stall
3) topical corticosteroids(make sure cornea is intact)
4) Surgery: Vitrectomy
What must you always check before using topical corticosteroids in the eye?
Check for corneal ulcers
How does Vitrectomy eleviate ERU?
Vitreous body becomes liquified with ERU, so cant push pinna up against the globe wall.
Suck out and replace. shows promise but not that much
- vitreous cutter and suction
- infusion line
