Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
What is a tissue?
A group of cells with similar structure and function
What are the 4 main types of tissue?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscular and Nervous tissue
What is epithelial tissue?
Covers the body, Lines organs, and in secretory portion of glands
What is connective tissue?
The most ABUNDANT tissue. Main functions are : Connection, Support and Protection
Which is the only tissue that makes movement possible?
Muscle tissue. Ability to contract
Which tissue is in charge of coordination and control of all body activity? Where is it located?
Nervous tissue, located in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves
Packed cells together. Underneath cell is the Basement Membrane. Has no blood vessels or nerves. Has great regeneration ability
Epithelial Tissue
Basement Membrane
Non cellular , chemicals, mostly protein sub layer inferior to epithelial cells
How do epithelial cells get nutrients if they do not have blood vessels?
Through diffusion from the blood vessels underneath the BM
What are the two types of classifications of epithelial tissue?
The SHAPE and the LAYERS
What are the shapes of epithelial cells?
Flat or Squamous
Cuboidal
Columnar
Irregular or Transitional cells
What are the layer distinctions in epithelial cells?
Simple (One layered)
Stratified Epithelial (More than one layer)
What are basal cells?
Deepest layer of cells located in stratified epithelial
What are apical cells?
The top layer of cells located in stratified epithelial
Simple Squamous Epithelial =
One layer of flat cells
Stratified Squamous Epithelial =
Multiple layers of flat cells
What are the functions of simple tissue?
Used for secretion, absorption, and passage
What are the functions of stratified tissues?
Protection. I.e. Stratified Squamous Epithelial (Skin for protection)
All transitional cells are stratified. True or False?
True.
What is unique about transitional epithelial?
The ability to stretch. This tissue is found in bladder/urinary system
