Epithelia Flashcards
What molecules comprise adhering junctions (aka zonula adherens)?
Cadherins, which connect actin cytoskeleton from one cell to actin cytoskeleton of another cell
What molecules comprise tight junctions?
Claudins and occludins
What comprises desmosomes?
Cadherins, which bind intermediate filaments of one cell to intermediate filaments of another cell
What protein comprises gap junctions?
Connexin, a transmembrane protein, which forms connexons, which form desmosomes
What does the junctional complex consist of?
Zonula occludens (tight junction), zonula adherens (adhering junction) and macula adherens (desmosome)
What special purpose do hemidesmosomes serve?
Anchor the cell to the BM, via transmembrane proteins known as integrins, which bind to extracellular laminins in the basement membrane
