Episclera and Sclera Flashcards
Superficial vs Deep Episcleritis
superficial blanches with phenylephrine and is mobile
deep is attached to sclera
Nodular Episcleritis
has a discrete, elevated area of inflamed episcleral tissue
Simple Episcleritis
episclera inflamed with no nodule
Tx for Episcleritis
cool compress and artificial tears
weak steroid qid 1-2 wks
oral NSAID- ibuprofen
Scleritis
inflammation of sclera
associated with systemic conditions
Anterior Non-Necrotizing Scleritis
middle aged
diffuse redness and pain
recurrence in same location
nodule
Anterior Necrotizing Scleritis
more aggressive, can cause vision loss and loss of eye
Vaso-Occlusive Necrotizing Scleritis
patches of scleral edema with non-perfusion- clear
Granulomatous Necrotizing Scleritis
raised and edematous area
near limbus
Surgically Induced Necrotizing Scleritis
necrosis at site of surgery
Complications of Necrotizing Scleritis
keratitis
uveitis
glaucoma
Scleromalacia Perforans
scleral thinning without inflammation
blue and bulging
older women w/ RA
no vision loss
Posterior Scleritis
sclera inflammed behind rectus mm insertion
potentially blinding
pain on eye movement
increased IOP
Systemic Causes of Scleritis
RA
Wegener granulomatosis
relapsing polychondritis
polyarteritis nodosa
Infectious Causes of Scleritis
HZV TB leprosy syphilis Lyme disease
