Allergic Conjunctivitis Flashcards
Seasonal Allergic Conjunctivitis
from triggers- pollen, dust, dander
Symptoms of Allergic Conjunctivitis
itchy eyes
from histamine response
Signs of Allergic Conjunctivitis
tearing
chemosis
papillae
Managing Allergic Conjunctivitis
avoid triggers artificial tears cold compress antihistamines mast cell stabilizers for prophylaxis
Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis
VKC
normally in kids (boys), eventually outgrow
recurrent with flare ups during spring/ summer
Symptoms of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis
extreme itch, tearing, photophobia
Signs of Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis
papillary rxn- cobblestone
stringy mucous discharge
corneal erosions
Managing Vernal Keratoconjunctivitis
cool compress
mast cell stabilizers/ anti-histamines
NSAIDs
steroids
Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis
AKC
similar to VKC, but chronic and in adults (many had VKC as kids)
Symptoms of Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis
extreme itching, tearing, photophobia
more severe/ persistent than VKC
Managing Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis
cool compress mast cell stabilizers/ antihistamines NSAIDs immune modulators surgery for corneal plaque removal
Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis
mechanically induced- contacts, prosthesis, exposed sutures
Symptoms of Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis
FB sensation
itching
CL intolerance
Signs of Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis
mucous discharge
CL displacement
upper tarsal papilla
Managing Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis
proper cleaning of CLs
anti-histamines/ mast cell stabilizers
Signs of Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis
corneal NV and erosion
conjunctival scarring
Ocular Pemphigoid
chronic autoimmune causing mucus membrane formation
idiopathic
Pathophysiology of Ocular Pemphigoid
trigger causes conjunctival inflammation w/ fibrosis- shortening of fornices- corneal changes- blindness
Treating Ocular Pemphigoid
comanage with rheumatologist
systemic therapy- Dapsone
Stephens-Johnson Syndrome
reaction to meds
painful rash that spreads and blisters
Ocular Manifestation of Stephens-Johnson Syndrome
edema and crusting of eyelids
palpebral conjunctivitis with vesicles/ bullae
pseudomembranes
dry eye
Tx of Stephens-Johnson Syndrome
remove meds
hydration
daily review- w/ corneal specialist
Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis
SLK
from lax conj causing mechanical irritation
often in women with abnormal throid function
Signs of Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis
upper tarsal and limbal papillary rxn
upper section conjunctival injection
SPK filaments
Management of Superior Limbic Keratoconjunctivitis
thyroid tx
lubricants
anti-inflammatory
Ligneous Conjunctivitis
abnormal healing of mucosal tissues
“wood like” pseudomembranes form
Tx for Ligneous Conjunctivitis
remove lesions
Pinguecula
degeneration of bulbar conj stroma
asymptomatic
yellowish
near limbus but does not cross
Pterygium
triangular fibrovascular growth
crosses limbus on to cornea
Tx of Pterygium
steroids/ lubricants for irritation
excision
Conjunctival Concretions
subepithelial cysts containing debris/ keratin
tiny and yellow, but can enlarge and calcify
asymptomatic unless eroding through epithelium
Mx of Conjunctival Concretions
removed with needle
