Corneal Degenerations Flashcards
Corneal Degeneration
age related changes that affect the peripheral > central portion of the cornea
often unilateral with vascularization
no treatment required
Corneal Arcus
lipid deposits in circumferential stromal band near limbus
Concerns of Corneal Arcus
check for hyperlipidemia if appearing under age 40
dyslipidemia for younger patients
check for carotid disease on unaffected side if unilateral
Vogt Limbal Girdle
peripheral whitish crescents that may or may not touch limbus
bilateral but asymmetrical
Corneal Farinata
minute bilateral “flour dust” deposits in deep stroma
Crocodile Shagreen
gray-white polygonal stromal opacities separated by clear spaces
norm in ant 2/3 of stroma
Band Keratopathy
deposits of calcium in and adjacent to Bowman’s layer
begins nasal and temporal and extends centrally
Salzmann’s Nodular Degeneration
formation of opaque hyaline nodules anterior to Bowman’s
idiopathic or with chronic irritation/ inflammation
Tx for Salzmann’s Nodular Degeneration
address underlying cause
lubrication
keratectomy
Cystinosis
AR disorder resulting in accumulation of cystine crystals in many organs of body
all forms show cystine crystal deposits in cornea
Infantile Cystinosis
presents in 1st year with renal failure by age 10
Late Onset Juvenile Cystinosis
occurs later in childhood with renal failure as late teen or early adult
Adult Cystinosis
often benign and incidentally discovered with SLE
Tx of Cystinosis
cysteamine
Wilson Disease
AR disorder causing copper accumulation in liver, brain, cornea
causes liver dysfunction and Parkinson’s
