- in ancient times a wreath of laurel which is Apollo’s symbolic tree was awarded to victors in athletic competitions and poetry contests
- laurel was associated with eternity and immorality as the leaves never wilt
-while f may have enjoyed triumph and immortality throug the devil and fame - this has been destroyed by his twisted ambitions which led him to the burning fires of hell

- echoes the prologue like Daedalus and his sin Icarus “ did mount above his reach”

_ he was doomed from the start for seeking unlawful things above his reach - his life serves as a warning to seek knowledge careful and we awry of the pitfall of pride, ambition and overreaching
