Act 3 Scene 3 Flashcards
“ The stealing of the same cup” - dick
“ as he follows us out so conjure him as he was never conjured in his life” - robin
This is to provide comic relief while making a point
-Into previous scenes F has been treated to a parade of the seven deadly sins and with M’s help has played low pranks on his holiness the pope
-Similarly Robin and Dick use magic to tease and torment a lowly wine merchant
-The subjects of these pranks to their social rank the pranks themselves are equally means spirited and petty in nature
-The point being that for all F knowledge and power his instincts for its use and no more noble or moral than the instincts of a couple of ridiculous low lives
-
“How i am vexed by these villains charms”
“ thou turned into this ugly shape for apish deeds transformed into an ape” - m
-when Emmy summoned, he’s outraged by their silliness
-he appears not as the obliging servant to F but as the proud and powerful Demon who snares for souls of Lucifer
- this is the M who will mercilessly work to send F to his doom
-his punishment for Robin and Dick‘s audacity is both amusing and reminder of his role of demonic destroyer as he transforms them into an eight and a dog to emphasise their loneliness and foolishness
