Act 1 Scene 4 Flashcards
Scene 4
-It’s a comic version of F devils bargain
-It’s a parody of what just happened
-It suggests that F is being manipulated just like Robin is
“ he would give his soul to the devil for a shoulder of mutton” -Wagner
-w i implies that the clown will sell his soul cheaply
-which mirrors F as he also does this
-w highlights the foolishness of F’s packed
- Wagner mirrors Mephistopheles in the scene as he persuade the clown to sign a pact to become his servant for seven years so the clown also mirrors F
“ I had need to have well roasted, and good sauce to it, if I pay so dear” - robin
-The clown is comedic in his response to Wagner
-Saying that he would sell his soul for a shoulder of mutton if it was well roasted and had good sauce
-This mock F further as it highlights that he too sells his soul to cheaply
“Bind thyself to me for seven years” - Wagner
-Why can I axis Me trois’s hair as he reiterates how the clown will sell his soul to him?
“ I will cause two devils presently to fetch thee away. Banio! Belcher!” - Wagner
-he calls the devil’s to persuade Robin to become his servant
-Again parody Mephistopheles’s role
-even the name of the devils are comedic
“ I’ll belch them, I’m not afraid of a devil” - robin
* runs up and down crying* SD
-The clone says that he would beat the devils and get power from this
-However, when they come, he runs up and down crying
-Implying that this is all just a front as he had contradicts this
-This linked to the front F put on
-Saying the concept of hell does not scare him in scene three
-But then being terrified in his final monologue
-This makes the clowns seem foolish and cowardly, it will appear comedic on stage
“ will you teach me this conjuring occupation?” - robin
-he asked Wagner for similar things as well as f asks for of Mephistopheles which is for him to be able to raise the devils, showing parallels
“ I’ll teach thee how to turn thy self to anything, to a dog, or a cat, or a mouse, or a rat, or anything” - Wagner
-He promises what the pack will offer the clown
-Highlighting the great chain of being
-Showing how the clown will be reduced by selling his soul as he will adopt the form of an animal
-The promises are what caused the clown to finally agree
-So like if the prospect of what could be done in the pact are what tempt him to do it
