Act 1 Scene 2 Flashcards
1
Q
“ i wonder what has become of Faustus that was wont to make our schools ring with sic probo” -scholar 1
A
-seems to show concern for F, friendship is highlighted
- must have changed his habits as people who he used to spend time with no longer see him
-lost companionship taking up black magic
-comic interlude
-light relief between darker more intense scenes
2
Q
“God in heaven knows” “be attentive” - Wagner
A
- he mocks the scholars by refusing to tell them where f is
-ironic that god in heaven knows when he’s participating in neromancy against gods will
-irony makes the scene comic
-elevating the seriousness - instead he tells scholars to find him themselves by being ‘attentive’
- showings his ability to dispute and also to protect f, emulating ( matching) Faustus’
intellectual powers and being comic - helps to undermine the scholars suggesting scholarship is rather self indulgent and perhaps not as difficult as f thinks
3
Q
“ at dinner with Valdes and Cornelius” - Wagner
A
- he speaks in simple prose
- in Elizabethan drama lower characters spoke this ay
-and he is the servant of F so has this low position
4
Q
“ i fear me nothing can reclaim him now”
A
- the choice of ‘ reclaim’ suggests fs choice has already damned him
-and his fate is set out n front of him - the scholars values knowledge but wont turn to necromancy
