Eosinophils (Exam 1) Flashcards
What dye do eosinophil granules stain with?
red acidic stain
What are the 3 differential diagnoses associated with eosinophilic leukocytosis?
allergies | chronic skin diseases | parasitic infections
What is the role of eosinophils in allergic reactions?
dampens inflammation by secreting histamine from granules
What organisms can cause a parasitic infection?
protozoa as well as other parasites (ie: toxoplasmosis and schistosomiases)
What are the 2 differential diagnoses for eosinopenia?
stress | administration of certain hormones
What is the lifespan of eosinophils in the BM?
3-6 days
What 2 substances do eosinophil granules contain?
hydrolytic enzymes | antihistamine
What are antihistamines?
acts against histamines = dampens inflammation
What 3 events would eosinophil count increase?
asthma | hay fever | parasitic infections
What is the function of eosinophils?
dampen inflammation
